Statement by the Black Legal Action Centre on Black History Month

This Black History Month, the Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC) honours our ancestors, elders and those who have come before us, who championed for equal rights and envisioned a future that is just.

We honour not only the Canadian Black pioneers, scientists, inventors, and scholars but also the countless and remarkable Canadians of African heritage who have suffered in silence and struggled to move forward in a country where support was limited, and failure was expected and/or anticipated. Despite discrimination and because of it, our people are capable and resilient. We have prevailed and thrived in the face of oppression and injustice.

BLAC will carry on the work of so many before us. We will continue in our mission to challenge and eradicate individual and systemic anti-Black racism through educational initiatives, advocacy, and litigation.

The Black Legal Action Centre

Established in 2017, the Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC) is an independent not-for-profit community legal clinic that combats individual and systemic anti-Black racism by providing free legal services, conducting research, developing public legal education materials, and engaging in test case litigation and law reform.
