Coalition requests the government publicly disclose COVID-19 data in provincial correctional facilities

On July 7, 2020, a coalition including Aboriginal Legal Services, Black Legal Action Centre, HIV & AIDS Legal Clinic Ontario and others submitted a letter to the Ontario government requesting that they publicly disclose data regarding the prevalence of COVID-19 in provincial correctional facilities and the steps being taken to prevent the spread of the virus.

The Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC) and the Alliance for Healthier Communities (The Alliance) are concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on those who are incarcerated. Due to the staggering numbers of Black people incarcerated in correctional facilities across the country, BLAC and the Alliance are acutely aware that the impact of the virus will be felt disproportionately by Black communities.
