BLAC Out Hate: Combating Hate Within the Confines of the Charter

Combating Hate Within the Confines of the Charter is an empowering presentation that helps Black community members understand their rights when confronted with anti-Black hate, including threats or intimidation from White Supremacist or hate-based groups in Canada. Grounded in key sections of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, this session explains the limits of freedoms such as expression and assembly, clarifies when hate speech becomes a criminal offence, and highlights the legal pathways available when discrimination or violence occurs.

Alongside legal knowledge, the presentation addresses the emotional impact of racial trauma and offers practical strategies for coping, healing, and building resilience. Participants should have a better understanding of how to assert their rights, and advocate for themselves and their communities when facing anti-Black hate.
