Demar Hewitt

Demar Kemar Hewitt is the Executive Director and General Counsel at Black Legal Action Centre. BLAC focuses on combating anti-black racism in Ontario. Demar is admitted to practice at the Bars in Ontario, Alberta, and Jamaica. He has appeared at all levels of Ontario Courts and as co-counsel at the Supreme Court on issues of importance to the Black communities. As the General Counsel at BLAC, Demar focuses on systemic racism issues, attacking practices and policies that have a disproportionate adverse effect on Black people through interventions and test case litigation.

Demar describes himself as an AI-geek and this passion fueled his post-graduate studies in Artificial Intelligence and the law. To distract himself otherwise, Demar is an avid DIYer who spends Spring gardening, Summer building new projects, Fall admire his work, and Winter attending YouTube University searching for something else to build.

Musab Ahmed

Musab Ahmed holds a Master’s degree in Financial Innovation & Technology from Queen’s University’s Smith School of Business, a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Insights & Analytics from Humber College, and a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Medical Sciences & Technology. Throughout his career, Musab has consistently leveraged finance and technology to drive community impact, optimizing operations in nonprofit organizations and diverse Business environments to enhance efficiency and promote equity.

Prior to his appointment at the Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC), Musab refined financial strategies at organizations, where he supported underserved communities by implementing data-informed cost reductions and strategic planning initiatives that improved operational surplus and aligned resources with mission-critical goals. Musab Ahmed is deeply committed to championing the evolution of a responsive, accountable, and financially resilient Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC). He is convinced that the clinic, in strategic partnership with allied community organizations, holds the transformative potential to reform legal and systemic structures, thereby fostering enduring equity and empowerment for Black communities.

Zainab Adewusi

Staff Lawyer

Zainab Adewusi is a Staff Lawyer at BLAC who is dedicated to protecting her clients’ rights and ensuring their voices are heard. She is deeply committed to advancing access to justice and addressing the impacts of systemic anti-Black racism through strong advocacy, meaningful client relationships, and compassionate, client-centered representation.

After earning her LLB from the University of Hull and an LLM in International Corporate and Commercial Law from the University of York, Zainab was called to the Ontario Bar in 2024.Her practice focuses on human rights, employment law, housing law, and social benefits, with experience representing clients in litigation and administrative proceedings. She is known for her strategic approach and meticulous attention to detail.

Zainab is a member of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL), Black Female Lawyers Network (BFLN), the Internationally Trained Lawyers Network (ITLS), and Women in eDiscovery.

Amar-Kareem Guimba

Amar-Kareem Guimba is a staff lawyer at the Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC), an organization focused
on delivering services to low income black Canadians to deal with instances of anti-black racism.
Kareem specializes in education and employment law. Kareem has been a member of BLAC since
December 2024. Prior to joining BLAC, Kareem volunteered at the Downtown Legal Services clinic while
studying at the University Toronto and completed his articling at the Community Legal Services of
Ottawa. Throughout his experience Kareem has become accustomed to the clinic system and has been
on the frontlines in using the legal system to help benefit those in need. With BLAC, Kareem hopes to
contribute meaningfully to combatting anti-black racism in Ontario and is eagerly looking forward to the
next steps of his legal journey

Chuks Nwajei

Staff Lawyer

Chuks is a lawyer at the Black Legal Action Centre, called to the Ontario Bar in 2025. He earned his Juris Doctor from Western University and completed his undergraduate studies at York University. His legal career reflects a commitment to social justice. During law school, he advocated for clients facing systemic barriers at a legal clinic and continued this work through the Law Practice Program, providing direct legal services to community members. His experiences have helped shape his dedication to advocacy and community service. Chuks is committed to improving access to justice for the Black community in Ontario and advocating against anti-Black racism.

Shevaun Pierre

Paralegal

Shevaun Pierre (she/her) is the Intake Coordinator/Paralegal at the Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC). She is a graduate of Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology.

Prior to joining BLAC, she worked in the Provincial Offences Court, Court Services and Prosecutions departments. Shevaun has sat on the Property Standards and Animal Services Appeal Committee and the Youth Justice Committee of the Boys and Girls club in Durham Region.

Shevaun has participated in discussions regarding anti-Black racism in literature and has worked towards amplifying Black voices in literature.

Shevaun is committed to community, equity, and diversity and working towards combating anti-Black racism in Ontario.

Raianna Wedemire-Peart

Raianna Wedemire-Peart holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, where she completed a major in Sociology and double minors in Philosophy, Ethics and Law, and Law in Society. Her academic studies focused on the intersection of social structures, legal systems, and ethical frameworks, allowing her to develop a critical understanding of systemic inequality, access to justice, and the impact of legal institutions on marginalized communities. Through her interdisciplinary education, Raianna cultivated strong research, analytical, and advocacy skills that continue to inform her professional and community-based work.

Following her undergraduate studies, Raianna pursued and obtained her Paralegal License (P1), where she developed specialized training in administrative law, tribunal advocacy, client representation, and legal procedure. Her legal education strengthened her ability to interpret legislation, prepare legal documentation, and support individuals navigating complex legal systems. She has developed particular knowledge in areas such as housing law, income security law, and human rights, reflecting her commitment to advancing equitable legal outcomes for underserved populations.

Raianna’s educational and professional experiences reflect her broader dedication to social justice, community empowerment, and improving access to justice. She remains committed to continued learning, advocacy, and supporting individuals and communities facing systemic barriers within legal and social systems.

Dr. Sanjay Campbell

Community Legal Worker

Sanjay Campbell is a Community Legal Worker at Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC), where he supports public legal education, community engagement, and initiatives addressing systemic anti-Black racism and barriers to access to justice. His work focuses on building collaborative spaces that connect legal advocacy, community knowledge, and public dialogue, with an emphasis on equity, inclusion, and institutional accountability.

Sanjay holds a PhD in Chemistry and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at McGill University, where his research focused on natural product synthesis and antibiotic development. His interdisciplinary background informs his approach to legal and community work, drawing on systems thinking and critical analysis to examine how institutions shape lived experiences and access to opportunity.

Venus Asamoah

Venus Asamoah graduated from the University of Toronto with an interdisciplinary study of Psychology and Criminology, Law and Society. Venus has extensive experience working with Black youth, families and individuals impacted by systemic carriers, criminalization, housing instability, and metal health challenges. This experience shapes her commitment to ensuring that clients receive not only effective legal support, but also respectful, culturally responsive service throughout their engagement and advocacy within the legal system.

Her work is grounded in a belief that meaningful access to justice requires both legal advocacy and strong community- based support. Through collaboration with legal staff and community partners, Venus contributes to a holistic model of service delivery that prioritizes clarity, dignity, and client based empowerment.

Venus is deeply committed to advancing equity and accountability within the justice system and believes strong community-rooted legal advocacy is essential to achieving lasting change. She is passionate about helping build a legal system that not only responds to harm, but actively works to dismantle the structural inequities that continue to impact Black communities across Ontario.

Nathan Heath

Executive Legal Assistant

Nathan holds a B.A. (Honours) in Criminology from York University and an LLB from the University of Law, London (UK). He has prior experience at a criminal law firm, where he worked directly with counsel on active court files, supported clientele, and assisted with case preparation, document management, and file administration.

Nathan is currently completing the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) examinations as part of his qualification for admission to the bar, while working full-time as a Legal Assistant. He presently serves as the Executive Legal Assistant at Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC), providing direct, high-level support to the Executive Director and General Counsel, and contributing to the efficient management of legal matters and operations. Nathan intends to practice law with a focus on advancing equality, expanding access to justice for marginalized communities, and supporting stable, inclusive, and sustainable opportunities through legal advocacy and institutional accountability.
