human rights

Both Ontario and Canadian laws provide human rights protections from discrimination. The discrimination must be based on a specific personal characteristic(s) or a perceived personal characteristic including: race, ancestry, place of origin, ethnic origin, colour, citizenship, religion, creed, sex (including pregnancy), gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status, disability, and receipt of public assistance.

If a person has been discriminated against, or has had their human rights violated contrary to Ontario or Canadian human rights laws, the Black Legal Action Centre may:

Give summary legal advice to individuals who wish to make a human rights complaint

Provide representation in appropriate circumstances

Provide referrals to other organizations that provide legal assistance who have experienced discrimination

Support other advocacy groups assisting with such a case.

The Black Legal Action Centre will not assist individuals or organizations who are responding to a human rights complaint against them.

The Steps to Justice website offers step-by-step information about human rights and other common legal problems.
